Fractions unit

We have begun a unit on fractions in math. Students are beginning to explore fractions and how they relate to the whole. Students should recognize that a fraction is breaking up a whole item or group into smaller, EQUAL groups. At home students can explore creating fractions by folding or cutting paper into equal sections and discussing the fractions they have created. They can continue to cut or fold these pieces equally to create new fractions. They can also create fractions of a group by taking a number of items (toys, pencils, toothpicks) and breaking them into smaller, equal groups (2 groups for half, 3 for thirds...). Have students play around and explore to help them learn.
