Grade 4 Social Studies Project

The grade 4 students have been assigned the following project:

The rubric for the project will be as follows:

Please have students begin work on the research involved with this over the holidays so that they will be ready for the due date of the rough draft. Please review the rough draft with the student, using the rubric as a guide, to ensure that everything is included and clear.

Measurement

Students have been learning about linear measurement in math. They have been measuring various items using millimetres and centimetres mostly. Students have also been drawing items given a specific measurement. We have also begun to work on adding the sides of polygons to find perimeter. Students are encouraged to practice measuring and finding perimeter at home (remembering to include the unit they are using to measure).

Finding Perimeter Scavenger Hunt

The students were given the perimeter of 13 items in our classroom. Their task was to search the room, measuring items and adding the side lengths to get their perimeter, in order to find the mystery items with the given perimeters.

Science Test Tomorrow

Due to the snow day today, the Science test (and the spelling quiz) has been moved to tomorrow.

Spelling List #5

The last spelling list before the holidays has been assigned for this week. The common part in all the words this week is the -ou.

Maker-Art

The students were given the opportunity to create something from many different materials. Students brought in materials they had purchased, found around home, or even recycling and used it with materials from the classroom to create!

Hour of Code

The students were exploring computer technology today by creating their own computer codes to make characters move, make noises, and other actions! They had a blast getting to work with some of their favourite games and characters while learning!
Students can continue this at home at code.org/learn

Homework for Wednesday, December 7

For homework, the grade 4 students have been asked to review the names and locations of the provinces and territories of Canada. We have begun our first unit in Social Studies on the regions of Canada, and students will be expected to know the names of the provinces and territories and their locations on a map by the end of the unit.

For homework, the grade 5 students have been asked to review the difference between rights and responsibilities and how they are connected. They should talk about different rights they have in their lives and the responsibilities that go along with those rights. We have begun our first social studies unit on Canadian Government and students will be expected to show an understanding of how Canadian citizens have certain rights, but have responsibilities that go along with each right.

Math: Measurement

We have begun our new measurement unit in math. Students were exploring using rulers and measuring tapes to measure things around the classroom. Students are encouraged to practice using rulers at home to measure the width and length of various objects using centimetres and millimetres.

Grade 5 Science Test

The Grade 5 students will be having a test on Monday on their Human Organ Sysytems Unit in Science. They will be asked to:

-identify the following major systems in the human body: skeletal system, digestive system, respiratory system, and circulatory system

-describe these systems' roles in the body

-describe, in detail, how these systems are interrelated (ie: when we breathe air into our lungs, the alveoli transfer the oxygen into our circulatory system, which then carries the oxygen to all the parts of the body).

-describe the structure and function of the major organs of the respiratory, circulatory, and digestive system.

Students have been asked to take home all of their sheets and notes from their folders for this unit to begin reviewing.

Grade 4 Science test

For their test on Monday on the Habitats and Communities Unit, students will need to demonstrate the following:

-an understanding that habitats are areas that provide plants and animals with the necessities of life (food, air, water, space, light)

-an understanding of food chains as systems in which energy  from the sun is transferred to producers (plants) and then to consumers (animals) and give examples of food chains with one producer and 2-3 consumers.

-ability to classify organisms according to their role in the food chain (ie: humans are consumers, wheat is a producer, an earthworm is a decomposer)

-ability to identify animals as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores (ie: wolves and snakes are carnivores as they only eat other animals; rabbits and horses are herbivores as they only eat plants; humans and pigs we omnivores as they will eat both plants and animals)

-ability to describe structural adaptations that allow plants and animals to survive in a specific habitat (ie: the thick skin of a cactus allows it to store water in a dry desert habitat, a duck's feet are webbed to allow it to move quickly in the water)

-an understanding of why all habitats have limits to the number of plants and animals they can support (why can an animal not continue to increase in number if there are no predators around to kill them? What would happen if the numbers kept increasing?)

Students have been asked to take home all of their notes and worksheets from their folder to begin reviewing for the test.

Spelling list #4

Here is the spelling list for this week. The common thread in this list is the ai in each word (not always making the same sound).
